Appreciating Wine: Winery Tour at Niagara-on-the-Lake

If you have an acquired taste for wine, I admire you!  Learning to appreciate wine has always been one of my goals.    So, when our friends invited us to go on a roadtrip for a Winery Tour at Niagara-on-the-Lake, I immediately thought that this might be the perfect, fun way of learning to appreciate wine!

Aside from its potential health benefits, drinking wine looks very sophisticated and classy.  *cue in Neal Caffrey from White Collar*  I also want to enjoy the taste of wine instead of forcing myself to drink during social gatherings.

Winery Tour at Niagara-on-the-Lake

There are several Winery Tours at Niagara-on-the-Lake.  Price is around $10-$15/person.  It’s cheaper than I thought.  For only $15/person, we were able to join Trius Winery’s “Best in Glass – Vineyard and Winery Tour.”

Our tour included the ff.:
  • Tips on how to do proper tasting of wines

These are some of the tips I remember: check the clarity of the wine by turning the glass, smell the wine, take 2 sips (1st is for cleaning the palate & 2nd is for the actual flavor and taste of the wine).

  • Tasting of 4 Trius wines: Trius Brut (Sparkling), Trius Pinot Grigio (White), Trius Red (Red), Trius Vidal Icewine (Icewine)

As a beginner, it was difficult for me to distinguish the certain taste in Trius Brut, Trius Pinot Grigio and Trius Red described by our tour guide.  For example, the Trius Red was supposed to have a tobacco taste but I couldn’t find it.  I had more than 2 sips of Trius Red so I’m sure my palate was already clean!  I really need a lot of practice!
Fun fact: Trius Brut and Trius Red were delivered to the Oscars a few months ago! 🙂

My favorite – Trius Vidal Icewine

Trius Vidal Icewine is a dessert wine.  Our tour guide advised us to leave it inside our mouths for a few seconds to get the full flavor.  It’s very rich, smooth, and sweet with a taste of peach.  This would make an excellent gift for family and friends.  I’m excited to give this as a souvenir for my sister! ♥

I enjoyed the Vineyard and Winery Tour of Trius Winery.  It was very informative but fun.  Believe it or not, I actually learned to appreciate wine!  Not fully though, I still need a lot of practice to fully acquire the taste of wine.  I’m still looking forward to the days when I will be able to distinguish the quality of the wine.

    1. Ah, so you’re one of the people I admire! Someday, I hope I can say that I absolutely love wines too! Pinot Grigio is the favorite of our tour guide. Now I’m curious to try the Portugese wine. Any recommendations?

      1. Hello! Just saw your reply now. About the wine recommendations, it depends on what you have available on your country and also your taste but my preferred region for wines is definitely the North, at Douro region. They all have a distinct personality and charm. Alentejo region is also extremely strong, especially for the full-bodied, invigorated, bold red wines.
Give it also a try to Vinho Verde regional wines.
        Cheers 🙂

  1. I love that “start liking wine” is something you are striving towards! I can see why you liked the Ice Wine if you are new to the wine scene, as it is sweet and dessert-like. I love Niagara on the Lake and while I’ve done a tour before this post is really making me want to go back again this summer!

    1. That’s what they said too about Icewine! 🙂 Which tour have you done? Have you tried the Pairing Tastings as well?

      1. I did an autumn tour of Niagara on the Lake which stopped at 5 wineries, but it was a while ago so I don’t remember all the details. I haven’t done a paired tasting yet but I would LOVE to!
